potato encrusted scallops with baby bok choy, broccolini and sweet potato chili sauce

my Easter tree is bigger than my Christmas tree...

Dinner 8: Thursday, March 13th/08

an interesting bottle of wine...not something I would have chosen...it was quite good...
Our main: sole topped with fresh pea puree on top of roasted baby zucchini, beets and fingerling potatoes, with a piece of fresh lemon...
For dessert: molten chocolate cake, with berries macerated in maple syrup and some fresh whipped cream...

the mighty chili dog

This dinner idea is credited to an episode of Throwdown with Bobby Flay, in which he goes to Los Angeles and challenges the owners of Pink's to a chili dog face off…
...and well here is our version of the best damn chili dog…
- toasted yellow bun
- grilled gourmet hot dog
- cheddar cheese
- Jason's chicken chili
- homemade guacamole
- pickle
yum… yum…
It was delicious… my first chili dog…

ahhh winter

Another winter storm...

possibly our last one for this season... it was coming down hard on Saturday...6:30am Sunday morning (actually more like 5:30... spring forward is not something that I look forward to)... however the snowplows did an excellent job of keeping up....

Today I'm thankful for the voices in my head.

As I was walking out of Dominion today, the automatic doors didn't swing open at my approach. It surprised me... and for a split second I had no idea what to do.

This total valley girl voice in my head asked "Like how do I get out of here?"

Thankfully she's not alone in there and someone answered "Just push stupid."

...and so I did.

It's in the citrus family but it's not an orange…

it looks like one though; a very sizeable orange. Danny at the Harvest Wagon refers to it as the Mexican Fruit Salad… I think it's a Minneola Tangelo, a hybrid between a grapefruit and a tangerine (or that's what my Google research led me to conclude).
The peel wasn't very thick and it comes off very easily. The oils in the peel did smell very orangey.
The fruit itself isn't supposed to have a lot of seeds, I guess I lucked out. It is extremely juicy and sweet. The pulp… well it was amazing…. to me it had the delicate taste of a white doughnut (UFO) peach, not citrusy at all. It's the pith that gave it that grapefruity aftertaste, kind of tangy and bitter but not as profound as in a regular grapefruit.
I couldn't get enough, this fruit is addictive. Too bad that it's has a very short (supposedly only 4 week harvest) in January-February. It'll be over too soon.

BBQ for dinner

We went to Phil's... the best in the city

Starting off with some corn bread...a couple of beers, I had the poser one..
Cachapa with melted cheese on the inside and some dill on top... we always have to have one...
I had pulled pork with beans and coleslaw
Jay had the variety plate, beef ribs, chicken, and brisket, with beans and potato salad...
everything is so unbelievably good and plentiful... that we ended up with a dogie bag..

Dinner 7: Thursday Feb. 28th, 2008

Eggplant and mushroom lasagna... what a beautiful brown top...and creamy layers... on top of Jays delicious tomato sauce...
garlic bread of course...
