This morning we drove for breakfast to The Original Pancake House. We started off with some coffee and ice water... one can never have enough water in this heat.
milk, butter, and syrup for our pancakes to come...
the dollar pancakes.... nice and fluffy, but not exactly the size of a dollar... we didn't have room to eat those, we took them to go...
Jay had potato pancakes with sour cream... those were really good...
and I broke all kind of healthy eating rules with stuffed french toast...
It was raining a bit once we were ready to go, but we were not discouraged... the rain was actually very pleasant... and it didn't last long...
We took a scenic drive down to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden...
I'm not sure why I didn't take a picture of the building... I guess I must have been too distracted by this beautiful plant...
The walls of the building look like they're made out of coral...
and now more plants...
the back of the Fairchild building...
iguanas are roaming freely all over the garden.. they are not welcome... they eat plants...
do you see, what I see ?
what about now?
that's better...
geckos' are everywhere as well...
I don't know the name of this brid, but it was pretty...
they're so green when they're young... they look like plants themselves...
mature iguana...
this one is getting there...
it looked like it was going to rain again, but it didn't...
another one...
just hanging out... do you see it?
let me zoom in....
bit closer...
the Orchid room...it's almost as if this wall was made for my mom...Mr. Stinky wasn't available...
isn't he gorgeous...
dragon fruit... we were very tempted to take one...
nice camouflage...
so pretty...
tropical spider...
yikes the tail is molting... i think...
I got tired of trying to capture live butterflies with my camera... they're too fast... so I settled for the sculptures...
it's almost like he's posing...
I think it's cute how they've color coordinated.. a mini desert in paradise..
these water lily leaves can grow up to 7 ft across... they are so strong that once they get to that size they are able to support the weight of a grown person... I would have loved to have tried that theory out..
signs of hurricane passing...
After all that walking, we decided to get some lunch - burritos as Mrs. Mendoza's. While driving we experienced a very intense storm for about 10 min.. that was it for rain for the rest of our trip. We got a bit sidetracked because instead of directing us to NW 41 St... I navigated to NW 41 Ave... which I don't think even exists. (I did manage to take the picture of the street we were supposed to have been turning on....oh the irony).
Some Mexican pop to start... strawberry for Jay and lemon for me... along with 3 salsas differing in heat: mild, medium and hot... which wasn't really that hot.
Jay had the sample plate...
A plate of tortilas with some guacamole and sour cream...
I had the veggie burrito... lunch was very delicious.
Art on the wall in Mrs. Mendoza's.
We drove back from Mrs. Mendoza's thru little Havana and stopped at Versailles Bakery for some authentic Cuban sweets. No one in the shop spoke english not even the counter girls. The service was take a number and wait to be called... we missed our number... it was loud.. I didn't hear 65 called in Spanish. But we did get served, with a bit of pointing and gesturing from our side. The pastries were delicious.
We then drove to the Holocaust Memorial in South Beach. "The Beginning - The first sculpture is of a mother and two nestling children fearful as the signs of the Holocaust first appear." (unfotunately I accidentaly deleted this picture.) "Their faces ask... "can it happen?" . . . "will God forsake us? The sculpture is framed by Anne Frank's message."
"The Arbor of History - A semicircular colonnade of Jerusalem stone columns support a wooden arbor with white bougainvillea vines. Following the arbor is a series of black granite slabs etched with photographs of the tortured Holocaust history."
"The Dome of Contemplation - The procession continues into an area enclosed by a dome and semicircular wall with an eternal memorial flame and inscription from the Twenty-Third Psalm. Piercing the dark interior of the dome is a shaft of yellow light projected from a central yellow star of David with the black letters "Jude," the patch of ignominy."
"The Lonely Path - The next space is a dark and lonely stone tunnel illuminated by thin slats of sunlight, the haunting voices of Israeli children singing songs from the Holocaust and the solemn memory of the camps carved into its walls. A crying child is seen in the distance and cries louder as one approaches along this lonely path.""The passage leads to a circular, walled plaza. The centerpiece of the plaza is a 42-foot bronze arm that appears to be reaching up out of the ground. It is inscribed, as if tattooed, with a serial number like those applied by the Nazis to concentration camp prisoners. There are also about a hundred life-sized bronze figures of people, some seeming to climb the arm, some scattered about the plaza." The Sculpture of Love and Anguish.
"Upon returning through the passageway, a second curved walkway and black granite wall - The Memorial Wall -, continuing the arc of the first, is inscribed with the names of Holocaust victims."
"The Final Sculpture - The journey ends. The final sculpture depicts the same mother and two children who started the journey . . . now dead ... framed by the words of Anne Frank."
After all that walking and sightseeing, we headed back to our hotel room to shower and unwind. For dinner we decided to head up the street to Jerry's Famous Deli. I've read a lot off good reviews, but ended up being disappointed. The food was alright but not special.
$7.00 Corona....
Jay had pastrami sandwich and coleslaw....I had chicken schnitzel and onion rings... $14.00 for this plate... talk about overpriced...
For dessert we took a walk.. it was a nice end to our day.
